Reason is seen as a rational process with structured steps while coming to conclusion. Many times we do things unconsciously (good or bad). When your emotions blindfold your thought process, things become irrational. Emotions make humans do things that are in fact not reasonable or rational. They make people say things they don't mean and lead them to oblivion. Emotions may consist of passions, moods or senses which then create internal feelings which influence the external behavior. That is how your rational process will be lost between the thoughtless process covered by passions, moods and senses.
It also happens that whatever we do unconsciously has the reason though momentarily we do not know it. That can be a process which you are being aligned completely or you are too much habituated. In Blink, Malcolm Gladwell explains how this is true and how sometimes right decisions are made in the blink of an eye. However there are situations which one cannot state the reason but can only justify with his heart. Sacrifices usually happen in this manner, though your mind won't accept it, your heart will.
Few of the lessons can only be experienced. Hope, patience and silence are few things which can only be experienced and learned through practice or observation. With these things, without anticipating you will get good results and you do not know how and why you got those results. When people are shouting at you or when you have a chance to shout, if you are silent then people respect your attitude and you will be respected however you cant explain what makes them feel that way. Same is the case with hope. Mind cannot articulate all the things however heart finds the justifications, which mind cannot state.
